ESPON on the Road at Open Seminar in Nafplion

The Open Seminar "Opportunities and threats for territorial cohesion: Blue Growth and Urban Poverty" is organised in cooperation with the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union within the framework of the ESPON 2013 Programme.

The event took place at the crossroads of two programming periods; while the last projects of the 2007-2013 funding period are wrapping up, European regions and cities are actively engaged in preparing their new Operational Programmes for the 2014 – 2020 Structural Funds period. At the same time, the European Commission is working on the 6th Report on Economic, Social and Territorial Cohesion that will offer new insight into regions’ progress in these areas and how the EU, national and regional governments have contributed.

The two priorities of the Hellenic Presidency, namely blue growth and urban poverty, were examined in the context of the current economic crisis.

The first day of the seminar was closed with a plenary presenting ESPON on the Road project, both in virtual and real terms. The session served as a discussion forum on how the results of ESPON projects could be capitalized in a local/regional context. In addition, it was a chance for discussion on how ESPON evidence can be used to support decision making, also in a wider context, bringing ESPON evidence closer to the users, opening the box of ESPON to new groups who have not been in touch with ESPON before. The session gathered experience from potential users t improveo the use of ESPON in the future as well.
